The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is second only to the newly introduced ZR1 range-topping performance model in the Corvette lineup and is widely regarded as one of the best performance bargains on the planet. Although the Z06 has a price tag just north of $74,000, it offers the kind of performance normally reserved for cars costing twice as much. At the heart of the Corvette Z06 is a 7.0-liter LS7 engine. Born out of Chevrolet's racing program, each V8 engine is hand-built at the GM Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan and features a dry-sump lubrication system, titanium valves and connecting rods, forged-steel crankshaft with six-bolt main bearings and a high-profile cam. The result is a Society of Automotive Engineers-certified 505 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. This enormous engine and the resulting power enable the latest Z06 Corvette to blast to 60 miles per hour is a short 3.7 seconds.

Pagani Zonda F
It's no mistake that Pagani chose to use the "F" badging to represent the first step up in performance for the Zonda above the stock Zonda S; it's the last initial of the late Juan Manuel Fangio, the F1 champion driver who served as both a contributor to and inspiration for the original Zonda supercar. The Zonda F was first introduced in 2005 and represents a major reworking of the design with a modified front end and spoiler, new venting, and a hydroformed intake chamber. More and improved lighting is also present. The Italian supercar maker's attention to detail is such that even the side mirrors have been revamped to improve airflow around the car at high speeds. As quick as the 555 hp V12 of the Zonda S may be, the Zonda F 's Mercedes-Benz engine is tuned even further by AMG and reaches 602 hp at a slightly higher 6150 rpm. Torque is also lifted slightly to just over 560 pound-feet but arrives at its peak at an earlier 4000 rpm. The acceleration gained from the extra power is slight -- 60 mph comes just a tenth of a second faster at 3.6 seconds -- but the overall power boost is enough to bring the car to a top speed of 214 mph.

The 2011 Ford Mustang GT
The Ford Motor Company has been nudged awake by the arrival of the Chevrolet Camaro (and to a lesser degree the Dodge Challenger). A year after the reincarnation of its old rival and but a year after the redesign of its own pony car, Ford is getting aggressive about its corner of the pony car market with the 2011 Ford Mustang GT, which introduces a 412-horsepower 5.0-liter V8, plus both a six-speed manual transmission and a six-speed automatic. The ingredients needed to make a Mustang: horsepower, horsepower, and more horsepower, plus a chrome pony, a glove box, and a cigarette lighter. Thankfully, Ford has embellished on this old-fashioned recipe with a car that handles, gets decent fuel economy when driven mildly, and doesn’t consume your driveway like the much larger and heavier Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger. Since the Mustang went into production 46 years ago, Ford has made steady and incremental improvements almost every year. The car has benefited, rising to the top of the muscle-car heap as others stagnated or went out of production. This year the changes are big, starting with a new four-cam, 32-valve, aluminum-constructed 5.0-liter V-8.

The Pagani Zonda C12 S 2011 has made an instant impact in the supercar world
The Pagani Zonda has made an instant impact in the supercar world. This new independent manufacturer based in the heart of Italian supercar country, has produced a car to rival the best on offer from Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini. The bodywork looks stunning from almost every angle and features distinctive styling touches such as the 'rocket' exhausts. The interior is equally stunning, with extensive use of leather, carbon fibre and aluminium in a luxuriously appointed cabin. Performance from the 7.3 Litre AMG tuned engine is staggering. 60mph arrives in just 3.7sec with 100mph in a remarkable 7.4sec (although, disappointingly, it can't quite crack the 200mph barrier). Pagani believe in giving the driver total control, so devices like traction and ABS are absent (in a car costing £230,000)

2011 Audi R8 GT
The Audi R8 solidified its supercar status when it received a version of the 5.2-liter V-10 from the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. While the R8’s V-10 is nearly identical, it is slightly less powerful, and it seemed reasonable that corporate politics might prevent the R8 from ever matching the horsepower figure of the Lambo. Now that this limited-edition R8 GT is granted the same 552-hp output as the little Lambo, the raging bull might very well be huffing, snorting, and ping-ponging off its pen walls in a fit of rage. To add insult to injury, the LP560’s weight advantage over the V-10 R8—3507 pounds versus 3755, according to our scales—crumbles, as the R8 GT drops an estimated 220 pounds. Ruh-roh, we smell a family feud in the works.
